Prof. David Montgomery is a geomorphologist teaching at the Univ. of Washington in Seattle. He specializes in the evolution of geological topography and the influence of geomorphological processes on ecological systems and human societies. His research has taken him world wide, the Cascades in the US to the Andes and the Himalayas and Tibetan plateau. “Dirt: The Erosion of Civilizations” is an important study about the role soil has played in the rise and collapse of civilizations and societies.
